Hi folks, The back of the house has just had a face life. A major job as it’s three floors high with eleven windows. A few years ago, a friend Jane and I removed old ceramic drainpipes attached to the back by passing a rope through them and attaching the end of the rope to […]

April + May

Sunday 28th April, May Day picnic and Easter Sunday 5th May + driftwood art

Dear Walkers and friends,

I am proposing the following Spring programme from Sikia, Halkidiki – which by the way is bursting with flowers.

On Sunday 28th April, I propose a walk through the forest of Platanitsi river valley, where after a short distance we find the old flour mill. We continue making a circular walk through the forest, duration about 3 ½ hours. If the weather is good, after the walk, we can walk into the camping area down to the beach and take a dip in the turquoise crystal water -So bring your cozzie and towel! As usual no special gear is needed, light walking boots or strong shoes or trainers will be ok.  We suggest you bring a small bottle of water and a snack to consume at our mid walk stop to keep you going to the finish. A spare pair of shoes to change into at the finish is essential as it keeps any mud or sand out of the taverna and cars.

After the walk, as always, we shall adjourn to a carefully selected top quality, low cost taverna, probably Agiris on the sea front in Sarti, for a late lunch, but this is of course optional.

Please let me know you are coming,

Directions, meeting and time:

Platanitsi is on the peninsular of Sithonia, Halkidiki, about 2 hrs drive from Thess, down the east side with spectacular views of Mt.Athos. At Platanitsi there is a large camping site with parking by the gates and this is where we can meet. I suggest 12.30 to allow people time for the drive. There will also be some local people.

Sikia is about 2 ½ hrs drive from Thessaloniki, an inland village 3 km from the coast. (see map in web site) My house is in the old part of town near the church. Other accommodation is available and prices vary according to demand and sharing.

On May Day we usually arrange a short walk near Sikia with a picnic bbQ in the hills. Sometimes we have games. This year May Day is a Wednesday and falls in the Easter week. If you would like to join in please get in touch and on this occasion you would have to contribute something to the picnic. The meeting place will be at my house, in the village of Sikia, where accommodation is available if you would like to stay (before or after) for any of the other events I am proposing.

On Easter Sunday, 5th May, I propose the Metochi walk in the hills above Sikia which has views of Mt.Athos and Toroni with a picnic stop at an old Metochi ruin. This walk is between 3 ½ – 4 hours, a circular route. Again I suggest a start time of 12.30 for those coming directly from Thessaloniki. Meet at my house or the slaughter house on the old Toroni road (if you know it). We will probably adjourn to a taverna called Limonaki at the beach.

Driftwood art –

Please look at the website to see what we have done in the past. I will arrange a driftwood art programme for anyone interested in combining with walk days. Driftwood Art days can be: 29th, 30th,April, 2nd , 4th, 6th, May. The art workshop with take place at a friend’s property in the fields. We already have quite a supply of driftwood, but we can take a walk along the beach to replenish supplies. Anyone wishing to make a mirror frame should bring a piece of mirror with them. I ask a small contribution (10 euro) for glue and use of other equipment.

Sikia horse race-

This event usually takes place in the morning, the first Tuesday after Easter. Horses race along the Sikia main beach, then traditional dancing and music are organised with food. It is to celebrate the liberation of Greeks from the prohibition of riding horses during the Turkish occupation and is usually around St.George’s Day. However, as this year Greek Easter is late, I will have to confirm this date. I assume it to be 7th May.

Accommodation during any of the above events can be at my house or other traditional village houses nearby.

I hope to see some of you at the above events and if not please pass this on to possible interested friends.

Many thanks,

HausHaus – in the tree

I’d like to tell you about an amazing idea my neighbours had last summer. They have a cute little summer house with a small terrace in the front. In total the house has about 40 square meters of space and they are a family of four with two fast growing teenage girls. And the girls sometimes bring friends! So the point is that space and privacy for them is a premium.

They came up with the idea of building a “decking”, surrounded by balustrades, above the small shed at the back of the house. This would be at a height to see over the top of the house across the village and slightly shaded by a tree in my garden. This was just my kind of project!!! They produced rough drawings and ideas and we discussed how to make it so that everyone could participate a little. I had the idea that we should be able to “deconstruct” the decking and balustrades so they could be put away in the winter to prevent undue weathering. This meant we would need to make a kit to put together in as little time as possible (approx 30 mins) with only a ratchet spanner and a screwdriver. So I think now the photos tell the story.

Steffi  (mum) says:“By the help of Pat even the kids have been able to finish their little house in a few hours .. Now we have a wonderful view over the top of Sikia houses…. Pat constructed a sort of “House puzzle ”

Lena : “House-House is my favourite place to be – reading a book on my own.”

Luise: ” It´s a perfect place to spent the early morning with a friend, while mum and dad are still sleeping.”IMG_1033

Rolf: (dad) says:”One little idea at first and Pat created a fantastic architecture. It was a great pleasure to work on it with her and amazing: her empathic way to advice the whole family, especially the kids! At last I enjoy to spend time on house-house playing with the children -have some coffee on it in between and drinking one last ‘M ythos’ at night watching the stars twinkling on house-house ..

House-house is made of : one step-ladder, 4 balustrades, 4 pieces of floor, bolts + screws and a lot of creativity and pedagogic skills of Pat …

We have already had an opening party there! We look forward to spending our first night under the stars next summer … our little balcony is round about 1,20 to 2,00 so that two people could spend the night on a mattress on the decking … protected by Pat’s tree ( and a mosquito net)….”P1000721

So hi folks, this is my first post to inform you about the coming St.George’s Day Celebration 17th April. Sikia has the nickname “Texas” by some, the young lads can be a bit wild. I’m going to try to upload photos and short videos of this day.
