I’m English remember and I’ve been teaching and examining English (for University Cambridge ESOL) in Greece now for nearly 30 years! I’m semi-retired and so there is a unique opportunity here (any time of year that suits you) to relax in a Greek environment, to holiday in the sun, or come off season for walks and other events and at the same time brush up your English. You can stay here; cook, eat, play, walk, study and discuss life in English and as Peter Knapp from Berlin says: “by the time I leave I’m even dreaming in English.”
Pictures below show Peter and Bearble doing their worksheets on the beach, studying at their friends’ summer house and their son’s friend Paulo having a cookery lesson with me to make his favourite Greek dish ‘pastisio’. We also have excursions in the mountains and of course, barbecues and dinners together.
I met Peter and his wife Baerble in Berlin whilst visiting friends. Coincidentally, they were coming to my village for a Sikia summer holiday and wanted to combine their holiday with topping up their English. Peter, in particular, desperately needed confidence in English to give a work presentation to an International audience. Bearble was happy to join in to refresh her English as she also uses English in her PR work. They have been coming back every year since. They and other friends have also given their children a rare opportunity during a holiday here to practice English.
This is what Peter and Baerble had to say:
“We are a German couple and five years ago we decided to top up our English. We need to speak and to understand English in our jobs at a good level. We are both confronted with different situations where we have to speak, write and act in English: in written and spoken language and in presentations.
We made different experiments with other language schools and we decided to look for a situation to learn English and to make a holiday at the beach under a blue sky in beautiful surroundings at the same time. We also needed tailor made lessons, which we could only find in a one to one situation. All together we found a perfect solution in Sikia: living in a non touristic village and learning English with Pat Pinchbeck, who has become a friend over the years.
We did a lot of different activities with Pat. She knows the surroundings of Sithonia very well and as a part of our English lessons she showed us to different places: trips over the hills with beautiful views, villages and some rests and picnics in the cool forest – we never would have found those places by ourselves.
We recommended the lessons with her to some friends and they all returned enthusiastically about the teaching competence, the nice place and kindness of Pat.”
So, consider, you can rent a room in my house or elsewhere in the village, and take a different approach to studying English with a tailor made package that suits your level and includes other activities.
